The Great Wellington Walk

Events Crew were honoured to have worked on yet another successful charity event recently. Following the success of our Sherborne Castle Fireworks display, the team were this time supporting The Great Wellington Walk in aid of Children in Need with BBC Somerset.

The five-day event saw Breakfast Show presenter Claire Carter walk 15 miles a day throughout Somerset whilst wearing a pair of wellington boots. The ambitious challenge over Somerset’s undulating terrain even included Claire pulling a 6ft set of spotted wellingtons behind her.

Events Crew were tasked with supporting the walk across the entire week, ensuring that all walkers and the supporting public were kept safe, traffic was managed, and traffic impact minimised. Events Crew also led, quite literally, and supplied two vehicles, one of which, a 4x4 Mercedes Sprinter, provided walking cover and defensive driving duties to make sure Claire and her fellow walkers were protected. The other vehicle, a Mercedes Sprinter 3.5 Tonne, was converted into a mobile studio for the duration of the walk. The vehicle, which is usually used for site and event security, includes an office with HD and Infrared cameras, which were perfect for the BBC to tap into to provide a Facebook live stream of the walk plus also to host their outside broadcasts from.

At the end of each day, the walk concluded at a venue that would welcome listeners to join Claire and the team to mark the end of her 15 miles for that day. For this, Events Crews SIA security operatives were on hand to ensure everyone had a safe and enjoyable evening before the next day commenced with the Breakfast Show and 15 more miles of walking.

Geoff Binding, Events Crew Operations Manager who led the project commented: “It was great to be a part of this event. Working with BBC personnel who were keen to be ambitious with what they could achieve, not just on the walk but also in preparation for the walk with rigging our vans for live broadcasts, online and over the radio. To top it all off, Children in Need is a great charity and we were happy to have supported the team and their fundraising efforts for such a good cause.”

Nick Bull, Editor at BBC Somerset comments: “This was one of the most ambitious projects we’ve ever undertaken and it was great to have the Events Crew on board.  They handled the logistics and ensured the safety of our staff throughout the event”.

Brent Mitchell, Director of Events Crew comments “This event gave us an opportunity to showcase our skills and equipment in a slightly different format. We are always happy to support local business and companies. Children in Need was a great event and the effort that BBC Somerset put in to make this such a success was fantastic.”
