Pack Monday Fair 2018 review
Sherborne played host to the new and revitalised Pack Monday Fair recently and welcomed two music nights and a Craft Fair to the long standing fun fair and traditional street fair.
The Anderton and Rowland Fun Fair pulled in to Sherborne and opened as always on the Thursday evening on the Terrace Playing Fields.
Pack Monday Fair weekend kicked off in spectacular style on Friday night, with over 300 people watching the Vox Beatles in the Pageant Gardens. The venue, specially built for the event, was a roaring success with a bar and food outlets. Saturday night saw a sell-out Ska night with RatRace and One Step Behind (a Madness tribute act) pack out the marquee and give the crowd a night of music, dancing and fun.
The new music nights were part of Events Crew’s plan to build on the weekend feel of the event and offer something for everyone in the town to make it a truly inclusive experience. This added extra to the event which saw close to 800 people enjoy two music nights right in the heart of Sherborne, a first for the event and town.
Alongside the music nights, the Fun Fair at the terraces was attracting plenty of visitors despite the damp weather. The music, lights, rides and laughter lifted the spirits of all those who came out to support.
The more traditional Pack Monday Street Market once again took place on the first Monday after the 10th October, with over 115 traders signed up to take part, over 50 up from the previous year. Organisers attempted to increase the range of products on offer as well as encourage the local traders to showcase their wares. The involvement from the local shops and businesses was excellent. The visitor numbers were estimated at 50% up on the previous year and there was plenty of trading taking place.
Alongside the fair, a stage was built on the Parade near the Conduit, providing a home to local radio Abbey 104 and showcasing local talent as buskers and bands entertained the crowd. The headline act was Headland who will again be performing at Sherborne Fireworks 2018.
Julian Hubbuck, Operations Manager of Pack Monday Fair for Events Crew commented “We are very pleased with how the event went and we now have a solid foundation on which to build this event going forward. The feedback we received has been overwhelmingly positive and we thank the people of Sherborne for supporting us and Pack Monday Fair.”
Councillor Jon Andrews comments “This year’s Pack Monday Fair was the best for many years. Events crew’s plan of making it a whole weekend worked well, with both entertainment events in Pageant gardens well attended. The atmosphere on the actual Pack Monday was the best I have known for years. My thanks go out to the Pack Monday Fair steering committee, Sherborne Castle estates and last but by no means least Events Crew for a fantastic weekend. Pack Monday Fair was a massive success and really highlighted Sherborne in a positive way. I would like to thank everyone who attended.”
The Fair is only possible with the support of the local people. Special thanks must go to Sherborne Castle Estates for their positive support and attitude which really helped the event run smoothly. Sherborne Town Council, Sherborne Chamber of Trade, Sherborne Indies, Sherborne Tourist Information, the Conduit Magazine and Abbey 104 also gave fantastic support throughout.
Pack Monday Fair will return in 2019 and Events Crew are looking to build on the success of this year and add more to the event to make it a ‘must do event’ for all of those in Sherborne and the local area.
