Events Crew fly the FLAG for the Events Industry on the Somerset Levels

Somerset based Events Crew have been adding to their already impressive skill set by working with Flooding on the Levels Action Group (FLAG) at Burrowbridge on the Somerset Levels.

Brent Mitchell of Events Crew comment: “We are a Somerset based company and watching the devastation was hard. We were pleased to contribute to the massive efforts of FLAG and other organisations working in the area.”

Events Crew provided resource to assist with the protection of homes and businesses working alongside the FLAG volunteers.

During the time on the levels, it was becoming apparent that there was another problem, namely the removal of one of the last remaining walking routes by the pump discharge pipes. As such a solution was sought from many specialist companies, however the problem remained.  Eventually Events Crew were asked and a plan was formulated.

Brent explains the scenario “Working in the events industry, you often have to come up with solutions to problems. Coming from an engineering background, the answer was straightforward, however the application was challenging.”

“In the end, we designed a walkway using LiteDeck, which we have normally use for stages and media platforms. Using adjustable jack legs, we were able to get the walkway level over the uneven ground and provide a safe walking environment. Once finished the structure was in use immediately.”

Events Crew have also supplied radio communications with a Motorola system, temporary offices and a VT1 lighting tower in nearby Moorland.

As a final thought Brent continues “Looking at the news, it may not be immediately apparent to people how they can help, but we in the Events Industry, have skills and equipment that can actively help those affected. Those skills we have learnt can make their lives better and these new ideas can then be taken forward to our normal work. I would ask as many people from the industry to do what they can.”

Pauline Van Pelt of FLAG comments:  “On behalf of the FLAG HQ we would sincerely like to thank everyone in the Events Crew Team for bringing their specialist knowledge and experience to help us with the many problems we were faced with during this disaster on the Somerset Levels.

You have provided us with a wide range of assistance and delivered solutions where others could not.  We appreciate everything you have done for us.”
